Back up Software

My first recommendation is to buy a good back up program.  There are back up programs that come with some Windows, but I personally prefer a stand alone program.  They offer much more control, and you can even automate the process – so you never have to remember to do another back up again!

There are a lot of choices out there when you are going to purchase your back up software.  There are some criteria to consider:

Easy to Use: OK, I think you know how important this is to me.  A beginner should be able to install and use the backup software without help.  And it should be convenient and offer an easy method for automated backups. Be cautious here, some backup software programs are designed for advanced computer users, not novices.

Compatibility: Make sure the back up software is compatible with your Windows operating system.  What may work for Windows 98 may not work on Windows XP.

Features:  Back up software should do more than just copy data files.  It should be flexible enough to allow you to schedule both full and custom back ups, and back up only what you want and when you want.

Ideally, your software will compare the back up to the original to verify accuracy.  Another feature to look for is software that can compress data so it takes up less storage space.

You also want a back up software that protects your security.  So choose one that protects passwords with encryption.

Backup and Restore – Your backup should be simple to set up and easy to restore.  Accessing restored data should be automatic, and the backup should preserve original data files and paths.

Help!: Sometimes, backing up and restoring your data can be complex.  Help files should offer clear, step-by-step instructions and troubleshooting tips.  The language should be simple to understand and the help information should be well organized so you can find answers fast.

This lesson comes with a very strong product recommendation.  It's a product I believe in and have used for the past year.  It makes backing up a breeze.  In fact, my computer backs up on its own every single day - completely hands-free!  Give it a trial run and let me know if you like it as much as i do:
